Born in Bedfordshire England in 1958, Simon Bull was educated at Ripon and Croydon before going to art schools in Cheltenham and Leeds. He has rapidly become one of England's most popular printmakers with an international reputation for his etchings and watercolours.
Working in mixed media with watercolours, gouache, pastels and even gold leaf, Simon's work - with its asymmetrical dynamism - has a jewel-like exuding warmth and power.
The first of his many one man exhibitions was held at the Hong Kong Hotel (Hong Kong) in 1976. Since then, his work has been exhibited at the important Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Mall Galleries, Olympia and the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham (UK).
Simon Bull works best from direct observation; "When out painting I keep my eyes open for likely subjects, interesting viewpoints and subtle combinations of colour and texture. Before starting a piece I have to see something that excites me. It may only be some yellow lichen on a rock, but that is where the excitement for me starts. I find that frequent travel to other countries, with their different qualities of light, enables me to see with fresh eyes the gems that lie on my doorstep".
Simon lived in the Lake District with his wife Joanna and their three children for many years, converting a former farmhouse and barn into the family home and studio.
Since then, the artist has moved and is based in the USA, selling originals and doing commission artwork for the great and good! He also appears on some of the America Cruise Ships as an artist in residence for short periods.
