There’s nothing to be afraid of! 'Ghost' is the name of a rather unique pair of artists originally from South Wales who have joined forces to make fantastic new contemporary artworks, with an urban flavour.
Blending digital art, photography, hand embellishment and raw painting skill, Ghost are making waves in the UK art market with their bold, street art inspired work and their debut collection: 'Ghost - Urban Vandal Collection' (2023).
Ghost look to change your viewpoint of famous people, icons and even museum pieces like the Mona Lisa, through clever alteration, overpainting and the use of graffiti. A variety of techniques are present, and you may be surprised to learn traditional oil painting is one of them, as well as spray paint and other mixed media.
The artwork is eye-catching & humorous with undertones of subversion and anti-establishment themes, and of course is heavily influenced by street art fashion & its brilliant boldness.
Jack from Ghost own words: ‘A few year's ago I was told not to leave my job as bricklayer and pursue my dream as an artist because ART IS A RISK! My reply was CAN'T STOP WONT STOP!’
Graffiti and street art clearly influence Ghost as they adorn almost every new release from their debut collection, but it is their shared affection for tattoo art that they feel most influences them.
They will create new ink designs (effectively tattoos) for each new painting and will include lots of layered meaning and even symbols within them for those that have a good eye for detail! But as you can easily observe, each painting and related limited edition, stands in its own right as beautifully unique.
But wait! there is a second dimension to their art. As well as the originals, each limited edition canvas will be hand finished & embellished by Ghost using a plethora of means & instinctively choosing what they feels works for that title.
As of 2023 there are very few artists that hand finish their own artwork, others come are: Daniel Mernagh, Paul Oz & even a range from Nigel Hemming
Every frame is also individually spray painted, so Ghost's editions are truly an Original-Limited Edition hybrid.
As usual, coming from the Wishbone stable of cutting edge artists, these will only be on sale through selected outlets and galleries and the limited edition editions are deliberately being kept small, to enhance long-term collectability,
For those of inquisitive mind set, Ghost are Jack and Samantha (real life partners) and I believe he is the artist and Sam collaborates & embellishes, and the result is the bold artwork we now enjoy.
