George Somerville's work is based around his experiences growing up in Glasgow, Scotland. The artist, born in 1947, strongly reflects on this period of time and created several characters influenced by his father, whose generation dressed & reflected these ‘gadgie’ men.
Their clothing and flat caps are very distinctive of course of a period of time in Scotland and the North of England, and these would later become an essential element within George’s artwork.
With no higher education or professional in art, Somerville relied solely on his ability to create & paint. Of course, growing up in the 1950's in an industrial city that really shaped the artist's work and allowed him to nostalgically create his popular pieces, which so many are drawn to!
His artwork has reached a whole new customer base, with UK released limited editions prints and sculptures in the 2000’s, which led to much success in the published art world and all around the British Isles.
Working in his studio on the east coast of Scotland, in a small fishing village, Somerville continues to paint and work on new ideas.
