Acclaimed British marine artist & fellow of RSMA
Duncan is one of the few artists within our portfolio who has special earnt accolades, in his case a fellow of the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA), a mark of distinction reserved for artists at the very forefront of marine painting. His seascape and harbour scenes have featured in the Society’s annual exhibitions for many years, consistently delighting visitors with their sensitive handling of light, tide and coastal architecture.
Early Passion, Lifelong Calling
Born in Hampshire in 1964, Palmar showed a strong passion for drawing and painting from a young age, often choosing the art room over almost anywhere else. By the age of nineteen he was already painting professionally, with his first exhibitions quickly attracting collectors who recognised the technical skill and atmosphere in his work.
Inspired by Coast, Harbour & Countryside
Palmar focuses on architectural landscapes, seascapes, harbour and beach scenes, often drawn from the shores of Devon, Cornwall and the wider British coastline. He is strongly inspired by the Newlyn School and other painters of light, seeking to balance atmosphere with carefully observed detail such as wet sands, harbour walls and reflections in still water.
He is equally at home with capturing English landscapes & rolling hills, as the limited editions ‘Lakeland Walk’ & ’Lake District Farmhouse’ attest to - quintessential English country life with cottages in Britain’s glorious Lake District.
In many ways he is a natural successor to the late Alan Ingham (1932-2002), the absolute master of painting Village England and similarly enjoyed a long career selling artwork within British galleries.
Master of Light, Texture and Mood
Working primarily in oils and watercolours, Duncan Palmar is known for paintings that feel both soothing and richly textured. His fluid, more contemporary pieces on gesso board explore the rhythms of the sea and spacious beaches, while his more detailed works linger on the glow of windows, the sheen of damp stone and the softness of evening skies.
Collectable British Marine Art
Over the years, Palmar has enjoyed sell-out exhibitions and a loyal following among collectors of contemporary British marine art. His paintings and limited edition prints bring a sense of calm, coastal air and gentle escapism to interiors, making them a popular choice for anyone who loves the sea, sailing, or simply the beauty of Britain’s shoreline.
