Born in Liverpool in 1962, Bill showed signs of what was to become his professional art career at a very young age. With a keen interest in painting since childhood, Bate knew after secondary school (at Quarry Bank) that this was the path he was going to pursue and embarked on an Art Foundation course at Liverpool Polytechnic (now Liverpool John Moores University).
After completing his course, Bate went onto to further art studies at the Central School of Art and Design in London (now Central Saint Martin's College of Arts and Design), a fine arts degree which saw him successfully graduate in 1984.
The degree has a lasting effect on him. It taught him to experiment and not to be so formulaic & particular in ways of creating artwork; also, while studying Bill was able to develop certain innate artistic skills and take them to the next level, particularly in the field of abstract figurative painting.
Bill was very much inspired and encouraged by his tutors, themselves well established artists, who provided the knowledge, skills and reference points for the young painter to pursue his passion.
The artist has always shown a fascination in figurative subjects and how light falls upon forms; in more recent images this has been through painting water. Bate seeks inspiration from many artists including: Bacon, Alma-Tadema, Caravaggio; Klimt & Rothko's influence is shown through the mood and atmosphere he can create through his colour palette.
He had a brief period as a published artist, with a range of best selling limited editions released through Washington Green Fine Art. With fourteen releases from 2009-2012, these editions would make a significant impact in the UK art market and establish Bill in the public consciousness, with his dreamy underwater images offering something unique in galleries - it also expanded his collector base.
Since turning professional, Bill’s artwork has been in constant demand, with regular exhibitions in London & one man shows & focuses throughout the UK & overseas.
