John Lowrie Morrison was born in Glasgow in 1948, and from an early age showed a talent for art. After completing a degree in Drawing and Painting at the Glasgow School of Art which was proposed to pursue a career in art and design; He founded his painting by teaching, first as Chief of Art and Design in Lochgilphead College of Art and then as Adviser to the Strathclyde Region. During this formative period John traveled extensively throughout Europe with his family and it was there where he began to develop the style that has brought him so much success.
Influenced by the work of the Expressionist school, John strongly defends Joan Eardley the maxim that: 'The painting is like breathing you have to do.' Working in oil on paper or canvas, their firm application of the paint carefree, seemingly random strokes breaths in his working life, which contrasts the rugged landscape of the Scottish Highlands with human elements more prosaic cottage, inlets and peoples. His bold use of energy adds color and intensity of each of the images that persuades us not only to see the landscape, but from experience.
Now John is devoted to painting full time, and has held a series of exhibitions both in the UK and as far away as Hong Kong and New York; Their images can now be found in many prestigious private and corporate collections worldwide . He is well known for his charity work and his paintings have become famous with the stars; Madonna has six in his collection and Sting recently purchased two.
