Born in March 1939, Gordon King's artistic talent and extraordinary ability where recognisable from a young child. Whilst training at the Carlton Studios in London his learning became focused on figurative illustration and later, he went on to study at Reading University - specialising in both painting and life drawing.
While in his early twenties Gordon worked for several large advertising agencies and magazines as an illustrator, but in his spare time he would paint portraits and exhibit his work wherever he could. His plan was to build up his ‘following’ to increase commissions (& cashflow) and by the mid 1970's he had succeeded with enough stability to leave illustration and become a full time watercolour artist.
The artist reached the height of his popularity in the 1980s-90s for painting semi-nude women with watercolours, approaching the canvas with skill and an ability to imbue the artwork with emotion and meaning, in a way that had not been done since the life of Sir William Russell Flint.
Gordon King was voted 'Published Artist of the Year' in 1999 by the Fine Art Trade Guild, a milestone in his career as a full time artist and one of a plethora of awards he has won during an acclaimed (and still ongoing) career.
