Observing and studying the elements of nature, figures, mythology and still life, Gary's work is ever popular and his attention to these subjects provides him with the unique differentiation among other contemporaries within the art world today.
The attention to detail the artist provides take much organization and skill despite the relaxed result of the final images he paints. Benfield creates the background with an expressionist fluidity in the paints and the quality feels almost dream like.
There are pencil marks still present throughout the pieces he produces, particularly the background and this is then combined with hints of colour which then defines the piece. Simply drawing and painting things as they are seen provides a spontaneous approach to his subjects and this then manages to capture the mood perfectly whether the concept is of animals or figures. This then also enable a lose movement to work across the pictorial space and this is the style in which Benfield favours.
The process Benfield adopts is to create numerous drawings and paintings, yet discards most in order to treasure the ones that he feels possesses real value and substance. He does not wish to put in numerous hours of work for images he feels that are not entirely correct.
Gary Benfield was born in Birmingham in 1965 and went onto study art at Stourbridge College of art. He then went onto further education at Wrexham College of art and after leaving solely concentrated of becoming a professional freelance illustrator. This was the emergence of the success in which Benfield's creations came to light.
