Derek Brown was born in London in 1924 and believes that his painting as a second career. After five years of active military service, he continued with his education, graduating as a dentist in 1952. Many of the artist's influences are derived from the support it has been assigned by the Australian impressionist Hayward Veal, who encouraged him to paint landscapes and still lifes using oils.
