Love, Lines and a Life in Colour - from Donetsk to the World Stage
From his mysterious and engaging paintings, we unpack the man behind the art! Born in 1961 in the industrial city of Donetsk, Ukraine, Andrei Protsouk grew up in a home where creativity was the family language, with a photographer father and an artist mother encouraging his talent from an early age. A childhood clay sculpture of a cowboy and an Indian hinted at a vivid imagination and a future that would eventually lead him far beyond the Soviet Union.
The artist has recently celebrated 40 years as professional painter and nearly 30 years selling his work in the UK! Which includes a new collection released in 2024, his anniversary year! His English journey and partnership was initiated by British publishing brothers Ray & Terry Loud, and I believe Ray has written the forward to Andrei’s New retrospective book: 'The Art Of Love - Book' – such is their ongoing friendship.
Serious training, serious talent
After finishing school, Andrei secured a coveted place at the 'Lugansk State School of Fine Art', where his natural gift was honed through rigorous classical training. He then progressed to the prestigious 'Ilya Repin Institute' in St Petersburg (now the 'Imperial Academy of Arts'), studying under the legendary Evsey Moiseenko (1916-1988), who took him under his wing as a protégé.
Life behind the Iron Curtain
Andrei’s early paintings were steeped in the atmosphere of Soviet life, using dark palettes, heavy textures and powerful compositions to convey tension, struggle and resilience. Even in these sombre works, his extraordinary sense of line and structure stood out, earning him top honours, scholarships and a place in the academy museum collections.
New beginnings in America
In the early 1990s, as Perestroika opened borders and appetites for Soviet art grew, Andrei travelled to the United States and chose to start a new chapter there with his family. Settling in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1994, he quickly established himself on the contemporary scene, exhibiting in New York and working with respected galleries.
The ‘Fine Line’ signature style
Protsouk is best known for his dynamic “Fine Line” technique, where precise, architectural lines weave through rich colour, pattern and texture to guide the viewer’s eye around the canvas. His training in composition means each piece feels choreographed, revealing fresh details with every revisit rather than offering a single static view.
Love, flirtation and modern life
Today, Andrei’s work is a vibrant celebration of love, music and playful human connection, often depicting couples dancing, embracing or flirting in bustling, stylised settings. Fellow artist Gennadii Gogoliuk has described this joyful, sensual energy as “Americana Eroticism”, capturing Andrei’s blend of Eastern roots and Western freedom.
Global collectors and UK appeal
Protsouk’s paintings and limited editions are collected worldwide, with corporate clients such as Coca‑Cola and Johnnie Walker and private collectors including former US president George W. Bush. His work is exhibited across the USA, Europe, New Zealand and Japan, and remains highly sought after by UK galleries and collectors looking for bold, romantic statement pieces.
Studio life and ongoing creativity
Andrei continues to live and work in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania (USA) where his studio-gallery showcases original oils, drawings and hand-embellished giclée prints. Constantly experimenting with new formats while staying true to his ‘Fine Line’ language, he creates art that feels both luxuriously decorative and deeply human – perfect for anyone who believes their walls should tell a love story.
