This reminds me of the limited edition ‘20'000 When The Day Was Don’t,’ which also appears on the cover of Leigh's book.
Now that edition doesn’t have a colourful shop as a feature, but the houses and the cobbled streets are one of the main ‘characters’ - they are a living history and a connection to the past present & future – as they are in ‘'Little Davy's Got Chips And Gravy.’
There is no better childhood supper than chips and gravy according to Leigh Lambert - well possibly chips 'n' mushy peas but that is another story!
In this painting: the Chip Shop itself called 'Mickey's Plaice', the signage, the shopfront & inside is painted with colour (as the children always are) and rightly becomes a focal point for this lovely limited edition print.
The backdrop to this shop and all the houses, appears to be the docks and a massive container ship with cranes unloading. Knowing Leigh, both the backdrop and the shop itself is or was a real place from up north. I did a search and couldn’t find an exact match for the fish & chip shop, but I will ask Leigh next time I see him…
Reminiscent of another bestselling Lambert called 'Little Charlie's Got Chips', the theme seems to be our early childhood liking of chips from the Chip Shop, on a Friday night? and the artist reminds us, it's something we never grow out of!
