Growing up, Lawrence was surrounded by the artwork of his father, Gerald Coulson, who had made quite a name for himself as an established and highly collected artist, specialising in landscapes and aviation - a contemporary of the late published artist David Shepherd.
At school, Coulson didn't show any special talent for art, but aged 21 was encouraged to try oil painting by his father; he discovered that, like his dad, he had quite the flair for oil painting and was soon selling his pictures to pubs and restaurants.
Eventually he had to leave his main job as a retail manager to make enough time for his art career and to keep up with the ever growing demand for those wishing to own them! Lawrence noticed a marked technical and aesthetic improvement in his paintings after this time, undoubtedly due to the extra energy he now had to work on his painting skills.
Lawrences often says his artistic inspiration is the English countryside itself and this is the reason he paints almost exclusively landscapes, enjoying capturing the mood of his chosen scene: for example, the tension that fills the air just before a thunderstorm.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Lawrence is of course a self-taught artist and has gone on to experience long term success within British High Street galleries and beyond. Lawrence has been on an amazing journey during his artistic life, and we are excited to see the next phase!
The artist lives in Lincolnshire, UK.
